Bring Me An Egg Nog And A Log O' Heaven

I got tagged by my cousin, Dawn. She blogs at Dawn's Disaster. I do her Super Sunday Sync link-up every Sunday where I hope to get new readers for my blog.

As far as the tagging goes, she sent me five questions that I have to answer and then I have to send five new questions (Crap. I have to think of five new questions?) to ask five other bloggers that I want to tag. Yes, it's a chain letter, but it gives me something to write about and hopefully my answers will mildly entertain you. So here they are:

1. What tradition does your family partake in that is unique to your family?

Hmm.  Well, the last five years-ish we've gotten together with my sister's family and we do an "Around the World" Christmas Dinner.  We cook up entrees from different countries and pig-out.

This is my sister, Melissa.  Don't mind the fro.
Except sometimes it gets in the way when we're
chopping onions for 'Around the World' Xmas.

The first year, we were really elaborate and had a map on the wall with tags indicating the country each entree was from. We had Caprese salad, stuffed grape leaves, Mexican corn bread, fruit salad in a hulled-out pineapple, curry chicken, hand-wrapped wontons, and a bunch of other stuff that we couldn't finish because we made too much.

Elaborately tagged map

My niece with some of our worldly food.

Last year, I think we had Swedish meatballs we cooked up from Ikea, tamales we bought already made, and microwaved dumplings from Trader Joe's.

And this year, at the rate we're going - they're coming over on Saturday and we still haven't talked about our menu - it may end up being Taco Bell with a side of sauerkraut and some Danish butter cookies for dessert.  Let's talk, Melissa.

2. What is your favorite Christmas dessert/treat?

Man, I remember having a Buche de Noel in French Club in high school, which I was the secretary of, I might add. I beat out the person who didn't show up for the election.  I sizzle.

AllRecipes.com
As you can see from the picture, the real name of this should be LOG O' HEAVEN. Because that's what it tastes like. Great, now I'm all verklempt. I just shed a tear over food - wouldn't be the first time.

But it looks like a pain in the rear to make because it involves rolling and stuff, but when somebody else makes it for me – which is like never – I swoon.  Look at those little mushroom puffs all over it.  I just want to bite it.

And no, we've never made this for our "Around the World" Xmas dinner.  Maybe Melissa will surprise me with one this year. (hint-hint)

3. Do you enjoy egg nog?  Spiked or regular?

My AOL instant message name was EggNogLvrKate, if that tells you anything. I love it that much. But, not as much as Buche de Noel. Nothing as much as Buche de Noel.

I prefer Lucerne Light Egg Nog without the liquor. Drinking egg nog is like sitting in the clouds just below Buche de Noel Heaven.

I thought about photoshopping a picture of a cloud with Buche de Noel sitting above it. But then realized it would take too long, so I didn't.

4. What is your favorite Christmas song?

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

What?

I'm serious.

Let me tell you why I'm serious. It's a nostalgic thing.  We have this music box or rotating music thingy, whatever you want to call it, and on my sister's first Christmas, I remember my dad holding it up for her to see (she was a month old) over her bassinet and letting it spin around and play it's music. I still have the music thingy. It sits on my mantel every Christmas. And I think about that one moment every time I pull it out of the box and put it on the mantel. And then I turn the knobby and let it spin and play.

It actually looks like Santa kissing
Mommy. So the song is totally deceiving.

5. Is there usually snow on the ground by you for Christmas?

I'm in Chicago, so there's usually snow on the ground all year long. Or at least it seems like it. But, yes, there usually is snow on the ground, I think. Not sure about this year though. Although a storm is approaching, as I type.

Steve just proofed this for me and said my answer to question #5 was flat.  But I don't really have anything funny to write about snow. Other than don't eat if it's yellow, and that's really not funny because everybody knows it. So, really, it's a cliche. Bleh. Anyhoo, I'm at the end of my rope for funny stuff and this post is growing like a weed, so let me cut to the chase and get on with the rest of the show...the clock is ticking...or I could just talk until I'm blue in the face, but there's no time like the present...

Now, I tag five other bloggers who are supposed to (but not required to) answer my questions. Although if they don't I wouldn't be surprised if they find some coal in their stockings this year.

Heidi at Heidi is Taking the Plunge - She's been blogging about the different activities she's done with her family each day for advent. It's pretty cool. I always wanted to do that. And then I got lazy.

Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs - Sara nominated me for the Liebster award today (THANK YOU!) and since I've received it already and am sure you guys are sick of hearing about secrets, I'm tagging her with some Christmas joy instead. :-)

Stacy at Ramblings of an Undiagnosed Mad Woman - Stacy and I compete for longest blog URL ever. I just counted. Crap, she beat me.

Stacy gave me the Blogger of the Year Award 2012 today. Yay! Thank you! As acceptance of her award, she shared seven things she couldn't live without.  My favorites: combat boots and "As Seen On TV crap" - I love that.  Since I got this award from Gina last week, I'm going to Christmas tag Stacy instead of answering the award questions.
I wonder if people will still be passing this award along in 2013. That would be very hipster. I just learned what hipster meant the other day, so I had to use it.

Janine at Janine's Confessions of a Mommyaholic - Janine blogs honestly about her life as a mom. She's part of the Bloppy Bloggers blogging support group I'm in, as is Stacy (above) and Melanie (below). I think everyone in our group agrees that Janine is the most loyal member of our group.  We love her and you will too!

Melanie at Scribbles & Smiles - Melanie blogs, designs, is a freelance writer, and is currently working on a novel. She lives in Cape Town, South Africa and one of her dreams is to travel through as many states as possible along Route 66 in the U.S. How cool is that?

My Questions:

1. What's the coolest stocking gift you've ever received?
2. Do you prefer to wrap gifts or use gift bags? (short and easy one)
3. What's the weirdest ornament on your tree? (I'll be sharing mine on Monday)
4. What are your thoughts on re-gifting?
5. Describe the best Christmas morning you've ever had. (not really a question, but ya know)

What's your favorite Christmas dessert? Is it Buche de Noel? I thought so. Do you like egg nog? Leave your answers in the comments. Or share anything...anything at all.

And don't forget to tweet. Tweeting is for lovers...just like Virginia.

Oh wow! This is such a nice surprise to start the day with....thank you Kate! :) Hmmm...I don't think i want coal in my stockings so I guess I better answer your questions. Hehehe. I've never had egg nog before and every year I vow to find a recipe and make it. I think since my sister-in-law is spending Christmas eve with us this year, I'll have to give it a go. Loved your post today...so "Christmassy" :)

  2. Kate, you just made my morning and I thank you thinking to include me in this and for all the nice words you said here about me and please know the feeling is so very mutual. Just so happy to have gotten to know you and do consider you a friend. I am also just so amazed at what a wonderful group we belong to with the Bloppy Bloggers.

I was also tagged by Kera from Nugget on a Budget last Friday and am planning on posting something about this on the weekend, because with everything we were doing for Sandy Hook it just somehow got pushed back. But I was so excited to be tagged then and am even more now, because this one is just so fun.
Loved reading all your Christmas traditions and learning a bit more about you on this post. Thanks again so very much for including me and thinking of me :) :)

  4. Oh no, they are not lame...they are delicious! I love those things. I tried those a few years ago for the first time and wondered where they'd been my whole life.

  8. lmao! What a fun post! And I agree about Stacy. I love her to death to the point I had to move closer to her so I could stalk her. Don't worry, she's aware. :) It's a mutual thing. :)

  12. Ahh! I too was in French club and made a Buche de Noel! Ours did NOT look like that ...but it was delicious. If Craft Fail.com existed back then, we would have been on it.

  13. I have to ask...did you photoshop your sister's hair? If not, tell your sister to not kill me for asking. My favorite Christmas dessert is cranberry cake! YUM. Oh and these wreath cookies my mom makes. They're like rice crispy treats but she uses corn flakes and green food coloring and shapes them like wreaths. Then she uses red-hot candies for the ornaments. Swoon...

  14. LOL! Yes, there was some website I found a few years ago where you could take a person's face and it stick inside other hairdos. I love that photo. My sister has straight to wavy brown hair - not a fro. Then I realized that nobody is going to know that that's a joke except people that know my sister. #lame

  15. Still REALLY funny! :)

  16. I've never tried that. I think I'm afraid of that whole raw eggs thing. They are raw, right?

    ReplyDelete
  17. LOL! That would have been awesome to see. I've made a few cakes that could go on Craft Fail. Bad stuff.

  18. That's so cool! Now you can kill two birds with one stone. :-)

  19. Ah-Ha! So now I'm getting to the bottom of the tagging that occurred! If I'd have been able to get here earlier, I would have understood and posted an "Out to Lunch" sign on my blog. lol A fro? In 2012? Shades of "Shaft" and "Superfly!" She's one bad.... okay, I'll shut my mouth (boy, I hope you know the words to the song or that one's going to really sound bad) I'm just trying to figure out how all of you maintain your weight with deserts you show? I gain weight just looking at them! Seriously, I wish you and your family a great and Merry Christmas!
