Here's What I Think of Reality TV (FTSF #5)

Welcome back to Finish The Sentence Friday (FTSF).  We give you a sentence and you finish it (however long or short you'd like). Write a post and link it up, or if you don't blog, feel free to finish the sentence in the comments for everyone to see.

This week's sentence:  When it comes to reality TV shows, I...

Next week in honor of V-day the sentence to finish is: The most-memorable Valentine's Day I ever had was...

When it comes to reality TV shows, I...

... would probably love them all.  But I don't watch TV. I've got this blogging and social media cauldron to obsessively stew over, so I have little time left for TV.

But if I stumble upon it, like at 2am because I accidentally drank a cup of what I thought was decaf House Blend at four in the afternoon, then I'm sure to be burrowing into the couch for a marathon of Hoarding: Buried Alive. I love that crap. When watching reality TV, I resemble nothing less than Gollum panting over his Precious. So that's another reason I can't watch it.

My first foray into reality TV was MTV's The Real World. They had the marathons on weekends sometimes and I would sit on my couch, fingers orange from Doritos, sipping my Cherry Pepsis, entranced like a zombie. Then I moved on to Road Rules. More recently, I've watched John & Kate Plus Eight, 432 Kids & Counting, and What Not To Wear, but haven't watched much since, other than the occasional Hoarding.

A side note: I remember feeling offended once because I heard that watching reality TV was like voyeurism.  I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. When I think of voyeurism, I don't think of watching TV, I think of situations like the time I drove to my ex-boyfriend's house and looked in all his windows to see what he was doing. Now that's voyeurism. Wait. Did I just type that out loud?

Since I hadn't watched anything in a while and wanted to have a current post on the topic, I decided to ask the Twitter/FB-world for suggestions on reality shows to watch. I got a lot of suggestions: Duck Dynasty (WTH is that that?), Biggest Loser, The Bachelor, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Wife Swap. All together they sounded like a big ball of cultural enlightenment.

So I wrote them all down, thought about looking up the dates and times when they'd be on and decided that was too much work, so I went to the library to check a few out instead.

But when I got there I got distracted and instead picked up a copy of "C to the F." For those of you that don't speak hip-hop, that's Chariots of Fire. I know this Academy Award-winning movie has nothing to do with reality TV, but I've been wanting to watch it since 1981 and it just seemed like the time was now.

So I took it home and I set the portable DVD player on my lap while Steve and I laid in bed. He fell asleep during the opening credits.

All I could think of during that opening scene of the guys running on the beach
with the powerful music playing, aside from the dirt splattering them in their faces and how outright funny that was, was Clark and Rusty Griswold running in slow-motion toward Wally World. So, clearly, the movie was doomed from the beginning because you have to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy C to the F, not the "I was planning to get a reality TV series, but got distracted by artsy crap instead" frame of mind.

I got bored about half way through - but I made it that far!

I know. I should have just checked out Honey Boo Boo instead. I'm sure that wouldn't have put me to sleep. Or maybe I should have just checked out what my ex-boyfriend was watching on his TV.

Do you watch reality TV? If so, what's your favorite? Tell me in the comments.

"Did I just type that out loud?".... "don't speak hip-hop..." HAHA! Nice work. I used to be obsessed with What Not To Wear. By the way, I liked how you organized this post with the rules/hosts stuff at the bottom. Are we allowed to do that, because I think I prefer it that way. Less cluttered, you know?

Haha! Awesome Kate! Bootlegger, thief.... and stalker! I'm impressed at how much effort you almost put into writing a current reality show post. This was better, particularly your half ass attempt to watch C to the F, which suddenly sounds like a much cooler flick that it ever did before! I didn't write a post this week. I'm slacking on the F to the TSF.

  4. LOL! You crack me up!

  5. Oh yeah, move it wherever you want. I'd actually like to move it right off the page because it looks so jumbled, but that would kind of defeat the purpose. :-)

I use to watch What Not to Wear. I love watching people get made over. So I did like the makeover show to where they had been gone from their families for a while. Another show - the makeover house one, I can't think of the name of it - its probably House Makeover. Anyway, I'm a big cry baby. So I couldn't handle the beginning why they were getting a new house or the end when they saw it. P.S. Never heard of Voyernism - I know I spelled it wrong. Too lazy to scroll back up and spellcheck can't help me. That's one way to never find a word in the dicitionary.

  7. My little secret is that I do like reality tv. I remember way back when-watching The Real World and analyzing why people do the stupid things they do. Also, I always wondered if they would do the same stupid things if they weren't being followed by a camera. I know some of these shows are somewhat scripted and so I always wonder what the people are really like or are they just trying to do things to get more screen time. I've talked about the Real Housewives with my friends: if we fought like they did we wouldn't be friends anymore, but I guess we don't get paid to be friends. Maybe I overanalyze things.

  8. Duck Dynasty. It's a keeper. I think I've told you this already, but the Hubs tells me it's me it's about my dad's side of the fam :)

I watch it religiously, and I'm as proud of it as I am embarrassed by it. It's such a guilty pleasure, but my husband hates it.

  11. Haha I forgot some of those great reality shows! Like anything on TLC--they think of the best shows. Duck Dynasty is also pretty hilarious, you should try that one out sometime :) Thanks for hosting, linking up for the first time this week!

  12. My wife is hooked which is bad for me, cause now I'm stuck with reality TV, I hear the cries of anguish and glee, from rednecks and jerks on shows you see. Yet hope is just her wishing to be, my basketball games rule over her reality TV!
Chariots of fire? Iwatched it once and was disappointed Ben Hur wasn't in it! Great post!

  14. Ooh see I'd love hoarders too, but I don't get any of the damn channels! haha - and yeah it was voyeurism with the ex. I woulda done the same thing :)

  15. Discovery Health and I do like Duck Dynasty and Lizard Lick Towing. Maybe because they are simple people like us who happened to master something well and make money from it long before they were stars. They didn't let it change them, they are who they are period. Want a really good laugh go look up Lizard Lick and catch some Ronisms.. you will have tears running down your face from it.

OK, not fair ... I already confessed in my post to being a reality junkie, but I have never heard of Duck Dynasty. Now you and some of your commenters are going to make me have to look that one up. Hopefully I own't like it! ;) [#FTSF]

  17. I'm a non-watcher of reality shows too...way back when I had been hooked on Survivor and The BAchelor, did a season or two of The Apprentice, a few seasons of American Idol, but that was pretty much it. I'm like you -- I spend too much time with my laptop and the blogworld (which is similar to Wally World in a lot of ways) to become too involved with any TV shows. Another fun link-up though!

I love that beginning scene, but it's because of the music rather than the running. If I started laughing during that scene though, I would have put in another movie. 432 kids - haha!

Cracking up at you peeking in your ex-boyfriend's windows! And I keep hearing that I should watch Honey Boo Boo, too. I just haven't. Thanks for hosting!

  20. It's like a high-brow peeping tom. Really not. It's just a sicko.

  21. Yeah, you told me about that one. A lot of people recommended that one. That and Pawn Stars. Haven't seen that one either.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ack!!! That's the one I REALLY want to see too. I forgot to write that one down when you suggested it. I'm writing it down now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think we get those channels anymore either. I don't know what happened. Sometimes I just need something to watch on those can't fall asleep nights.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm writing down Lizard Lick - the title is enough to get me to watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. LOL! Seems like a lot of people are raving about how funny it is. I don't even know what station it's on and if I even get it! :-)

  26. I've seen little clips of HBB, but that's it. Kind of reminds me of Toddlers and Tiaras, but I guess I don't know what I'm talking about since I haven't seen it.

  27. LOL! Yeah, I was definitely NOT in the right frame of mind.

I loved to read your side of the story, Katherine.

I watched Survivor/Bachelor many years ago but then realized that it is not my cup of tea...lol
thanks for hosting this FTSF. I enjoy it thoroughly since it helps me put on my thinking cap :)

LOL. I've tried to watch Chariots a couple of times and still haven't made it very far. As for the reality shows; hubby like Alaska State Troopers (he's waiting to see if we know anyone), Ice Road Truckers (so we can laugh at them), Alaska Coast Guard (powerful stuff), Ax Men, Duck Dynasty, and Deadliest Catch (he was co-workers with one of the deck hands during the off season - working construction in the summers). Me, I'd rather write a reality show than watch it. :)

Here's what I think of reality TV...it's a bunch of poop...and totally not reality...if you really want drama, heartache, suspense, backstabbing and exciting cliffhangers...just open your eyes and get out of bed in the morning.

    ReplyDelete
  31. MichaelJohnMele5:38 PM

Speaking of Alaska...I've heard it's full of serial killers...is that true...and do you personally know any?

  32. MichaelJohnMele5:39 PM

I watched Survivor too...when it first came out...now it's kind of old and stale...so I moved on to something different.

  33. Kate, Tried commenting from my phone earlier today, but I guess the reality is that it didn't get good enough ratings to show up! I tried watching chariots of fire once, but got fed up with it when I found Ben Hur wasn't in it! Boring!!!! I just wonder what the rest of the world thinks of us if these shows are what represent us as reality? Good post!

"Wait, did I just type that out loud?"--best line ever! I have to agree, Duck Dynasty is one you need to see--but only if you watch it from the beginning; the later episodes have felt a little more contrived. And I've never made it through more than ten minutes of Chariots of Fire!

  36. Melanie Chisnall9:33 AM

Eeek, I used to watch John and Kate Plus Eight too. Until I realized they seemed to be all in it for the money, even through their messy divorce, then I stopped watching. These shows are so silly, but man - they are a little addictive when you're bored or have nothing better to do.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, as I've said several times already, I don't watch reality shows! But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy posts like this one! This was a fun read, and kept me there all the way through! (I did not fall asleep!) So I'll see you around, and have a good day!

  38. Your blog post made me have a thought. What if you started watching these programs as a sexy, svelte, tanned and toned lady and watched so many that you ended up on Biggest loser, gah!
Only joking, that was the general "you" not you yourself Kate.
